One fed up girl shares her thoughts and opinions on movies as she reviews them.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time and I never cease to be amazed at
the kind of cast Ben Stiller can attract
to a movie. I must admit as a passionate loather of everything Tom
Cruise I was almost pleasantly surprised by his contribution to the movie but
predictably after he'd been on the screen for a few minutes he started to annoy me.
The truly delicious part of this film is the box inside the box inside the box. There are
actors playing actors in a movie who are being soldiers who end up in a conflict that
they think is part of a movie but is actually real. And the best part of the film:
Robert Downey Jr is an American actor
playing the part of an Australian actor in the movie playing a black american soldier -
no wonder even he has an identity crisis.
One thing about this film (it doesn't bother me at all but may upset others) is the
language and gore in this film. I've never heard those kind of words come out of Tom
Cruise's mouth... and the extreme gore coupled with revolting humour although very very
funny - let's just say don't watch this movie while eating dinner! Rated 7.3/10 on
IMDB.

Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)
First things first, this movie is way better than the first one, when we hit those
epic moments they actually felt epic rather than falling flat like in the first movie.
But those bratty kids although older are still annoying - but this time all of them
except for Anna Popplewell who plays
Susan are annoying - so that's a downer but there are plenty of talking animals to keep
you interested. Apart from a slow section in the middle of the movie it moves along quite
nicely and naturally it has a subtely delivered moral to leave us gagging at the end.
Come to think of it the slow section might just have been the part of the movie when
Ben Barnes was nowhere to be seen...
maybe that's the only reason I liked the movie? Anyway, it's rated 7.1/10 on
IMDB.

The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Well I didn't make it all through the first attempt at making The Hulk into a movie,
sorry Eric (Banner) nor did I make it all the way through this one. If you've seen the
movie you'll know the scene I'm about to mention, if you haven't seen the movie you'll be
able to pick it out pretty quick if you see the movie - I managed to watch until
that scene where he drags his ex-girlfriend off to a cave! Feminists unite against this
movie... just because he's big and green doesn't reduce the insult one bit.
So onto the good bits. The special effects were good. I also really liked Edward
Norton and the plot was pretty solid the problem were the deviations from
action/adventure comic book thing, which so often just destroy these movies and make them
painful and unwatchable. Contrary to popular belief you don't need all that relationship
development and rediscovery crap in a comic book adaptation, 7.3/10 on IMDB.

Babylon A.D. (2008)
When you watch a Vin Diesel movie you
expect a certain thing: action (usually), fight sequences, minimal dialogue, and not a
whole lot of plot. And this film delivers on almost all fronts Diesel fans won't be
disappointed. Vin Diesel is his usual self while Michelle
Yeoh of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame is excellent. Also worth a mention is
Mélanie Thierry who plays Aurora
and just looks SO familiar but even after checking out her resume I still can't work out
why...
However, the plot is either confusing or just takes too long to develop into anything
meaningful - I still haven't decided which! The film starts of by showing us that Vin's
character Toorop (huh?) is totally hardcore yet still honourable, then he gets contracted
to transport a girl (Aurora) from Russia to the United States but we don't really find
out why exactly until the last fifteen minutes of the movie, although Aurora does insist
on being generally weird for the whole film. Rated 5.3/10 on IMDB.

Inland Empire (2006)
Okay fine, when you go to see a David Lynch
film (or anything by David Lynch for that matter) you have to be prepared to be confused.
However, after you've been confused for a while you usually start to understand...
something (or you delude yourself into thinking you understand). But this film is truly
confusing!
The movie revolves around the remake of an abandoned Polish film and the lead actresses
slide into fantasy as she falls for her co-star. Eventually she (and the viewer) can no
longer tell reality from fantasy and no one has a clue what is going on.
Nothing anyone writes about this film will help you decide whether you should see it, or
really prepare you for what is absolutely surreal, this film deserves its rating of
7.2/10 on IMDB. It is amazing, just be
prepared for slow-moving confusion.

Firewall (2006)
Wasn't this film a little bit of a disaster? Something that shows in its rating of
5.8/10 on IMDB! Now we all know the
Harrison Ford can act but when the
characters are unlikeable and the script predicatable that doesn't really count for much.
Actually, Harrison's acting (or lack thereof) may be partially to blame because he just
put off this grumpy old man vibe, which you'll recognise if you've seen him interviewed
semi recently.
The script doesn't go anywhere new but it is however farcical. How old is Harrison Ford
now? 50? 60? Well, he was born in 1942 so you do the math. But he's old... that's an
indisputable fact. So for him to have a bit of a punch on with one of the kidnappers /
blackmailers who cannot even be 50 years old - and win - is ludicrous, funny but still
ridiculous. Admittedly it wasn't exactly pretty, but he took a couple of hits that really
should have put him down for the count!

Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Wow, this film was a highly anticipated disappointment! And when I saw the rating of
7.1/10 on IMDB I was surprised, there
was a lot of stuff that didn't find the mark with this film. For starters the actors
portraying the Pevensie children... Skandar
Keynes who plays Edmund, William
Moseley who plays Peter and Anna
Poppelwell who plays Susan are all awful. Georgie
Henley who is Lucy in the film is better but that may just be because she's standing
next to the other three! Tilda Swinton
and James McAvoy are huge standouts as
the White Witch and Mr. Tumnus but not even they can save this movie.
The problem was, the story is great, and we all remember reading the books - and loving
them - but when we got to the final battle, that was supposed to be all epic and whatnot,
it just fell flat on its face. We should have been wow but we were just whatever...

Underworld (2003)
Finally a fresh spin on the whole vampire werewolf thing (or vampire lycan thing, lycan
being short for lycanthrope). This movie is currently rated 6.7/10 on IMDB
and will appeal to the comic book, action, vampire, werewolf, fantasy, sci-fi loving
demographic. Vampires as the good guys is also a nice fresh angle on the whole and once
again we're seeing the idea that vampires are getting into the whole capitalism thing and
manufacturing synthetic blood products (whoda thunk it?) so that they don't have to eat
us normal people.
The movie starts off by showing us that vampires are cool - Kate
Beckingsale jumps down from very very high up - and then we get to see some action as
we shoot up a subway station, and finally the lycans (or werewolves) are introduced so
it's all happening straight away. Then quite a solid plot shows up and we learn about the
history between the vampires and the lycans and why the lycans are *gasp* hunting a
human while having to deal with some vampire politics and the unwanted attentions of
vampire-in-charge Kraven played by Shane
Brolly. Good stuff.
